What is Service?
Service is generally a work done by one person or group that benefits another. These can be of many forms- namely customer, social, economic, military, domestic and many more. Each manifestation of these has its own significance and an entirely different meaning in itself too. In the economic terms though, this is generally customer related. This also runs on the principle of staying connected to existing customers and prospective customers and helping them with the services provided by the organization.
Customer service is an essential wing of any business, government and nationally important organization. Without a division for this, it is even safe to say that the said organization would find difficulty in running its day to day business, and even worse, it may even collapse. This sector is now booming, with more and more professionals trained in the sector being recruited by top multi nationals.
Customer service is the provision of able guidance to a customer before after and during the sale of the good. It involves the establishment of an affable rapport with the prospective client, who may prove to be of great value to the company. The main agenda of this is to make sure the company’s product is to have met the customer’s expectations. Two forms or customer exist- one is the conventional staffed one and the other is the self one. An easy example of this type of self is the internet based customer facilities where the customer has to acquire the relevant part of it by going through a set of prescribed procedures as directed on the company’s web site. The ISO and International Customer Services Institute are two bodies that strive towards excellence in this field.
The government can also extend service to its citizens. This is the most basic form of these is what is called public one. This can range from anything as simple as gas and electricity supply to military, broadcasting, public transport and education. The main beacon light as far as public part of it is concerned is that these are compulsorily provided to all and sundry irrespective of their financial backgrounds or incomes. The Canada government has embarked on an innovative initiative called Service Canada, which is in response to Canadian citizens’ cries for better amenities and services as provided by the government of Canada. This in Canada is a single point of access for all of Canadians’ grievances regarding participating in the country and this can be done through letters, phone or e mails.
At least 75 % of Canadians are employed in this sector in Canada, making it one of the most vibrant industries in the country. Largest employers of Canadians many such of the sector are the retail sector, followed by the financial sector. The financial portion of the Canadian economy has been growing rapidly over the past few years and is mainly concentrated in the suburbs of Toronto and Calgary. In Canada, the education and health service sectors are mainly under the control of the Government of Canada.
