What is a Privacy Commission? The Privacy Commission of Canada, headed by the privacy commissioner was formed to put into effect the privacy law that protects the personal information about the Canadian citizens collected by the government. It also helps in investigating complaints against the violation of Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) that regulates the way in which private information is collected and used by various organizations electronically.
According to a survey conducted by them it has been found that one in six Canadians has been a victim of privacy theft. They are now trying to create awareness about such information mishandling so that citizens are better aware when they sign up on any website or with any organization that collects information on them.
The privacy act deals with the way in which information on individuals is collected and used by the federal government. This law states that a government institution may not collect information on an individual unless necessary for its functioning, must inform individuals that it is collecting the information when it does so with some exceptions, use the information only for the purpose for which it was collected except under certain circumstances and get the individuals consent before disclosing any such information. Also the information cannot be misused to harm an individual and the person can make a complaint if he or she feels that the information collected was put to wrong use. It is the duty of the privacy commission to look into complaints when this law is violated.
Another major law protected by the privacy commission is the PIPEDA that states that when any private organization collects information about an individual, it has to do so with the consent of the individual, inform the individual why it is collecting the information, use the information only for the purpose for which it was collected and not for any other malicious use, protect the information and not disclose without permission from the individual and ensure that the information is accurate and up to date and correct any mistakes when the individual requests it to do so.
When any of these laws are violated, complaints can be made to the privacy commission whose duty it is to investigate these complaints, perform audits, and instigate court action when necessary. It also keeps track of the way in which personal information is handled by various organizations and reports the procedures used by them publicly. Another one of its many functions include promoting awareness of issues relating to private information handling so that the public understands its rights and duties.

The commission will then investigate the complaints and prepare a report based on this.
