What is a Negotiation? Negotiation is a term which most of us will be familiar with. In fact, we would have all, in all probabilities negotiated for something at some point of time. Negotiation is nothing more than a dialogue which takes place between two people or two entities in order to settle a dispute. Negotiation can also be carried on by a third party. The need to negotiate comes when the two parties involved are not able to agree on something. In such cases, they negotiate so as to reach a neutral ground. Negotiation results in something which can is agreed by both sides.

Negotiation is carried out in government organizations, non- profit organizations, businesses, among nations, between individuals, etc. When one studies about negotiation, it is called negotiation theory. Those who work as negotiators are usually trained. They may be referred to as peace negotiators, union negotiators, hostage negotiators or they might work under the title of a diplomat or a broker or a legislator.

There are basically two types of negotiation. The first is when you want to beat your opposition then the type of negotiation is referred to as ‘distributive negotiation’. The second is when you want a friendly negotiation. This is referred to as ‘integrative negotiation’. In the former, you might not always end up with what you want as you might not be willing to compromise. Whereas in the latter, you might get what is second best as both sides will be willing to compromise. This way, both the parties is likely to benefit.

The Canadians are always known to be good negotiators. They have most of the skills needed to be a good negotiator. When you negotiate, you need to know what you want. You should know how much you are willing to compromise to get what you want. While negotiating, it is very important to keep in mind that one should not lose what they are negotiating for. That is to say that though you can make compromises, the compromises should not be in a way which will result in you getting nothing.

So it is always better to decide in advance as to how much one is willing to compromise while negotiating. Also one should know what exactly is involved in the deal. You should know the extremes. What is the maximum limit you can go to while negotiating and where will you be required to stop? You should also be aware of what exactly your opposition needs. Knowing this will help the process of negotiating to a large extent.

The most important skill that a good negotiator needs is to be able to convince the other person. While negotiating, the negotiator should make the other person feel that the deal he is being offered is the best. Only when the other person is convinced, he will be willing to compromise. So it is up to the negotiator to convince people. It is also important that the deal is a fair one as no one likes to lose. What is a Negotiation?
