The legislation is worded in a way that suggests that credit reporting agencies cannot charge a fee to provide credit information to consumers in NS. That's why we can obtain the credit report (it's free), but not the credit score. The credit reporting agencies are not allowed to charge for the information, but they are also not willing to give it to us for free, so they have set a policy that NS residents are not eligible to obtain their credit score.

In all other provinces, there is no limiting legislation regarding purchase of credit information, so all other Canadians can purchase their score.

Lenders can obtain the score at any time you apply for credit. Asking a lender to give you your score is the only way to obtain the information in NS.

I won't argue with you since I live in Ontario. Still, it's hard to see what parts of sections 9 to 12 of The Nova Scotia Consumer Reporting Act prevent TransUnion and Equifax from releasing your credit score. You mean they won't do it online, even if you pay their fee, or that they just won't include it for free along with your written credit report?

Hey T. Walsh,
So... you're saying that creditors, collection agencies can order your credit score, but you as the individual can't.

Why is that?

Ha... you're right Raymond,

It's New Brunswick that doesn't have a law.

I wrote the letter to the Minister of Justice in New Brunswick.

It's been a long day!!

Yep, it's true Monty. In Nova Scotia, we can order and receive a credit report, but we cannot purchase our credit score, because of the limiting legislation in the province regarding how credit information is treated.

Hey T.Walsh,
I'll back you on that 100%, even though I'm in Saskatchewan.

Back in 2004, I wrote a letter to the Minister of Justice in New Brunswick about the fact that there is/was no legislation regarding credit reporting agencies in New Brunswick.

I received a reply back from the Minister of Justice of New Brunswick, (I'm forgetting his name) saying that this type of legislation wasn't in the budget.

To confirm, you can't purchase your credit score?.

I also encourage people in New Brunswick to sign a petition that would help them be able to get better control over their credit reports.

Just so you know... I spoke with the folks at http://www.privcom.gc.ca who indicated that the PIPEDA helps regulate some of the credit reporting agencies activities.

I wasn't aware that you couldn't order your credit score there!!

EDITED TO CHANGE Nova Scotia to New Brunswick!!

Nova Scotia Residents Cannot Obtain Credit Score

Postby twalsh » Sun Apr 01, 2007 12:00:00 AM

Hi all,

Currently, Nova Scotia residents cannot obtain their own credit score from either credit reporting agency in Canada-Equifax and Transunion. (Can obtain the credit report, but not the credit score)

Provincial legislation has in effect banned Nova Scotians from obtaining their credit score, despite the fact that any lender can obtain it at the click of a button.

For more information, please visit my petition at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/creditns/petition.html

Nova Scotia residents...get angry about this, and sign up!
