Paying collection agencies

Postby dreemr13 » Tue Aug 02, 2011 11:08:59 AM

Long story short, my wife who did not have credit in Canada, was killed walking across a street by a hit and run driver in January 2009. Faced with the grief, losing several months of business income and her income having to be paid outside of our home, plus everything on my credit I started getting behind. Over the last two years, I was only able to cancel her gym membership. Telus wouldn't even cancel her cell phone without two years worth of cancelation fees because we used my credit for the contract. So over the following year I got behind in everything and when that happens interest and fees go up...

Anyway January 2009 my FICO was 705. Today it is 419.

So I have finally gotten ahead with my business and I want to start to clean this mess up by paying smaller bills off and working my way up, however I am concerned with accounts being updated and forcing me to wait and additional 6 years for these debt to be cleared off. if this is the case then I might as well wait it out.

What is the best way to approach these creditors (collection agencies) and do this without being harrassed after I do, some of these have rediculious amounts. CapitalOne was originally $1100 ($100 over the limit) and is showing now at $2350 owing?

I did contact CBV Collections about an original $160 debt that they now want $280 inlcuding interest for and said they would update it as paid once I did it but does that mean it will be there for 6 years after the update it? Should I perhaps just send letters asking their position? Explaining mine?

I have learned now to have insurance and always read the small print. What's sick though is the driver who killed my wife will be elligible for a pardon before my credit has recovered. Even with a history of impaired driving he only got a one year conditional sentence. I do get to sue him though which is what my lawyer has been working on for two years, however it could take up to 10 years for that to conclude.

Sorry for the venting, just I don't want to get the flack for why I am in debt, just hoping for solutions to help get out of it.
