Hi!

You need to check and see if this is still valid, but, as far as I know, if a company has not sent you a BILL for the last 2 years they can not collect. So, whether the debt is yours or not - the debt is considered wiped clean. I mean really, they have written this off already! Only murder has no statute of limitations! The collection agency is probably trying to scare you. If they do log R9 to your credit - you can contest it. What's important is that you check your credit rating on EQUIFAX every year (it's free) to make usre everything is okay.( I am in Quebec so I'm not sure if this is a federal or provincial law.)

Hope this helps!

20+ yr old debt that is not mine

Postby Far_Stretch » Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:00:00 AM

Can anything be done about debt that is from 1981-86 that isn't even mine? (I believe an old roomate applied and used a CanadianTire Credit card (and even paid the statements until 1986) using "my" identity.
I've recieved 2 letters in the last year (14 months) from Contact Resource Services demanding that I satify this debt.
I've told (written) them saying it not mine and to stop writing me.
What else can I do - will affect my (now) great credit standing down the road?
Thanks
Sela
