I have bookmarked your website and also downloaded "Damage Control".
EVERYONE regardless of whether they have had dealings with HFC/Best
Buy needs to read this brochure. It is shocking and a real eye
opener.
I don't know if this has any bearings on your post, but hubby and I
opened a charge account with Best Buy. We only asked for $500 in
credit but they insisted on giving us $2500. At any rate, we
purchased one of those pay by XXXX and no finance charges computer a while later. Soon after, we received a solicitation to come in for a
loan. (now we know where they got our info from--Best Buy
application). This turned out to be one of those nefarious home
equity line of credit/secondary mortgage/personal equity loan (take
your pick, HFC uses all 3 terms). To shorten this story, the monthly
payment was so high (we were lied to about the amount, among many other things) we finally had to do a Chapter 13 to get rid of them.
Meanwhile, AFTER the time limit for secured lenders to put in claims,
Household was claiming that we owed them a SECURED interest in the computer to the tune of just over $1000. (it was a form letter--they
must do this a lot) The bill for the computer and for items purchased
using the Best Buy card always came on one bill and never to my
knowledge was the computer secured. Our lawyer wrote them asking for proof. We never saw anything in writing but our monthly trustee
payment was raised $40 to accommodate their claim. We are seeing our lawyer on 12/24 and are demanding to see Household's justification
that this was a secured claim. In addition, the balance for the
computer was about $325. Adding finance charges for it does not equal the $1028 they claim. Besides, the computer is nowhere worth even the amount they want. One can buy an equivalent new one today for about
$800.
HRS/Best Buy's (alleged) treatment of those in our military,
especially after 9/11, makes Scrooge look like Santa Clause. People
should also check out your site on the retail giant
www.bestbuycard.net to discover how some companies do business legally
using these practices and get away with it.
