I did some research yesterday with regards to groceries and gas cash backs.
The Capital One - Cash Back Guaranteed MasterCard® for Gas & Groceries or the Scotia Momentum card mention that they give 2% cash back on groceries and gas purchases.
In doing some research I went to four groceries stores yesterday and asked them if they knew they were giving points to these credit cards....
For example I went Walmart, Sobey's, Superstore and Safeway. I went to customer service for each and asked if they were familiar with the fact that Capital One and Scotiabank were giving cash back rewards based on making purchases at their stores... Each store emphatically said "NO"... they weren't aware that I could collect Capital One points and Scotiabank momentum points at their store.
I was surprised with that response to be honest.
Here's what happens at these stores.
Superstore has Presidents' Choice Mastercard
Safeway deals with American Express Airmiles
Sobeys has it's own MasterCard
Walmart has it's own MasterCard
I then went home and contacted Capital One to ask what actually happens
After a 15 minute conversation we were able to find the spot on the Capital One website where it lists the groceries stores and gas stations that accept that Capital One card.
It turns out that Capital One has a company code for each of these grocery stores. So when you make a purchase at Superstore or Sobeys, CapitalOne recognizes the company code and then gives you your 2% for that purchase.
Problem solved.
