Defaulted fine suspensions in Ontario top 250000

Postby montyloree » Fri Dec 01, 2006 12:00:00 AM

The issue of indefinite license suspensions in Ontario for defaulted fines is currently under review. Currently if the debtor is unwilling or unable to satify the debt the suspension stays in place forever. There is currently a test case in Thunder Bay where a disabled individual who relies totally on Social Assistance - Ontario disability has been suspended for nearly 20 years for traffic fines dating back to the 1980s. Acting Dep Ass Attorney General Ann Merritt has indicated some reforms of the act are forthcoming. It has been suggested that a limitation period would solve the problem. The current system may in fact violate several sections of the charter. Please send your comments hopefully supportive ones to ann.merritt@jus.gov.on.ca
