Wrong Information on Credit Report

Postby elle505 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 03:14:11 PM

I wonder if anyone has some advice. I applied for an Amex card over the phone and they were about to approve it until suddenly the woman on the phhone asked me to hold. When she came back on the line she said she couldn't approve it because my credit report says that I used to have an Amex card and it was not in good standing. I told her I never had an Amex card in my life. She said that because my SIN number was linked with the account, it will be hard to prove it wasn't mine.
I checked both Equifax and Transunion and it does say I had this card back in 2003. I thought maybe they were mixing me up with my mother because we lived at the same address at the time and we have a similar name. However, her old card is a different number than what it says on her report!
Transunion said they will "investigate" but they couldn't tell me what exactly their investigative process is. I suspect Equifax will be the same.
Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this issue. It took me a long time to repair my credit and I would hate to have to take a step backwards.
