My husband and I pulled his TU credit report last year for the first time and discovered there was a collection listed from Radio Shack and was with Portfolio Management. We contacted PM by phone on several occassions to ask them to verify the debt as he has never had a radio shack account. We also disputed the item with Transunion but not equifax...the CA never verified the debt and the collection no longer shows on his TU report...
We didn't check his equifax until this past May and the collection shows on equifax (trying to obtain mortgage and the broker uses equifax not TU)
We sent a letter to Portfolio Mgmt requesting validation of the debt and did not hear back...but did receive a new collection letter from a company called Aktiv Kapital trying to collect on the debt (we now know they are the same company) We sent a registered letter to AK asking them to verify the debt on August 23 and have heard nothing. We then sent a dispute to Equifax on Oct 21st asking them to verify the debt along with copies of the letters sent and proof of delivery. Today we recieved a response from Equifax saying they contacted AK and confirm the item is reported properly...
I have spent today trying to contact Radio Shack but it no longer exists in Canada, they are now Circuit City...unable to find a phone number for CC I did a live chat with a rep on their website and he gave me a phone number for the company InterTan that apparently owns CC...I only got an answering machine...
What do I do next??? This debt is making it impossible for us to get a mortgage, original amount of debt is $4000 and amount currently owing is $8500...the lenders don't want to go near us until this is resolved...as it is over $5000...I hate to pay it out of principal, it is not our debt...
Does equifax not have to verify with original creditor? What does AK have to give as validation of the debt to equifax? Could we send a copy of his TU report to equifax to show them that they removed it?
I'm very frustrated as we are now going to miss out on buying a house until this is removed from his report, last activity was 04/04
