I9 Credit Reporting

Does anyone have any advise regarding this...a couple of years ago I had a Savings Account with one of the Major Banks and this account had a $1000 overfraft attached to it....while using the overdraft I assumed that the rules of this account were the same as other overdraft accounts I have had with this bank in the past...In the past I had to pay the balance off every six months and make a 100.00 deposit every month against the overdraft....I found out this was not the case with this account...after 8 months of using this account and carrying a balance in the overdraft account I received a letter from a third party collection agnecy on behalf of the bank which stated that I had to pay the balance of the overdraft in full at the end of every month. They also said that I was in violation of the rules for this account...I immediatley paid the balance owing and closed the account....Just recently I went to another bank to do some business and there was an I9 registered against me with regards to this old account...The account was marked as PAID in Full and it was indeed verified that the account was paid in full and closed...BUT the bank that I dealt with in the past investigated the I9 at my request and said that yes the account was paid in full but because they had sent me documentation regarding this for almost a year they had put an I9 against me for late payment..before I had paid and closed the account...They said they had all the correspondence on file and there was nothing they could due about the I9 even though the account was paid in full...Apparently while I was using the account and making minimal payments against the overdraft I was in continual violation of the account and never received any initial notices...When I received one notice affer a lengthy time I acted...only now with an I9 against me...everything else is perfect....I am very diligent about credit...Should I continue to fight this...How long does an I9 stay on your record ??? and yes it prevented me from doing business with another institution...Thanks
