A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME STILL SMELLS LIKE A ROSE - AND SO DOES A SKUNK !

True. True. Even if you put a $2000 Armani suit on a skunk, he still smells like a skunk.

That argument deals with discharging the moral as opposed to the legal obligations of the debt. To be sure, very true. The person would discharge the moral obligation if there was one (and no legitimate and absolute bankruptcy discharge had extinguished it) no matter if they paid off the original creditor or a subsequent debt buyer.

Obviously, if someone tried to pay the original creditor a debt that had been sold, they would not legally or morally be able to accept it. The proceeds would have to go the debt buyer speculator who purchased it as one would any other investment commodity. Maybe, the creditors your sister approached with late payment sold the debt already and had to decline.

BUT that doesn't make the bottom feeders who capitalize on others' misfortune, accident and sickness any less of a bottom feeder.

I agree there are people that still want to pay and thats good. They are honoring their agreement and i respect them for that. My problem though is with the tactics used by collection agencies.Like Raymond said about image manipulation, they present this nice helpful image but they scrounge around buying debts that are already passed the SOL. Then use deceit and tricks to make money on these already dead debts. Just look at the number of people on forums like this compare to the number of SOL accounts in the country. There are a lot of people these collection agencies are preying on that dont have a clue about the law and thats where the money is made. I could stand them more if they could at least be honest and not put on this different face like being on sick kids boards etc. There is an old saying around here that you can paint a skunk a differenent color than black and white but underneath the new color he still stinks. That goes for these companies also.

zacksdad,

My sister and brother in laws business went down the toilet about 10 years ago. They couldn't pay off their suppliers.

They vowed that they would pay off each and every one.

10 years later, my sister is working in Fort McMurray and making excellent money. Out of guilt, or to keep her promises, she has paid off each and every creditor that she owed money to.

The funny thing is that she had to contact these old suppliers that she dealt with 10 years ago. Many of which had written off the debt and didn't want to deal with it any longer.

She paid them anyways. Now she feels whole again.

So... for the fact that collection agencies buy old debt at a deep discount and then try to collect on it.. . there are people who are still willing to pay old debts... even though they're past the statutes of limitations.

Well, as collector Jaimedude00, phrased it in his Feb. 11, 2008 post, "It's sneaky and I love it."

It's all about image manipulation. That's why a lot of these guys are on hospital and charity fundraising boards for the sick and disadvantaged. They chip in 50 bucks every now and then after they sue them and repossess their home when they get sick or into an accident. I wonder how much they're going to chip in for the Murphys. Any idea, Belinda?

I like the crap on their website. They buy old debts for a few dollars hoping they get a couple thousand back and they are "helping " I just never looked at them that way,i guess i will have to change my opinion of them as they are really just helping us all. The money they make has nothing to do with it all, they are only in it to help. Why cant they be honest and admit to what lying ,crooked ,scavaging scum they really are.

hmmm...

http://www.aktivkapital.ca/

I haven't heard about them.. Is this a collection agency that I should set up a separate discussion area for?

Aktiv Kapital looks kind of Russian, doesn't it?

Yeah, they'll eat just about anything - except crow.

Apparently, the taste of any scavenger is so awful that even another scavenger will disdain it.
