Everyone please realize that collection agencies in Ontario are regulated and have to follw the law.

If a collection is harassing you, phoning friends and relatives, releasing private information, etc., you can sue them.

And the limit in Small Claims Court in Ontario rises to $25 000 on 1 January 2010.

So if you are being harrased and the law violated, sue them.

Once these agencies started getting numerous small claims suits lodged against them, they will notice.

If you want to take action, I am a licenced paralegal under the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Thank you.

thanks everyone for your response, i'm losing my marbles here...it's pretty bad when you want to pay back your debt and they won't take anything but the full amount and some threatening messages of fraud charges....

Save those messages. They are extortion. Send copies of them to your provincial bar association. It is illegal to threaten criminal action in an attempt to collect money.

Here is an interesting read as someone has put their experience and thoughts out there regarding the Law Office of Paul Kupferstein.

Although I haven't dealt with the Kupferstein law office.....I think it is interesting how similar the expereince and how a person feels violated by collection agents is to the way I felt when dealing with collectors.

Have you been served with papers to go to court?

i too am in nova scotia and am going through the same thing, my son hears the messages on the phone, mr.hazel tells me it's too late to make payment arrangements, ( i was sick and out of work for 7 months), now i am in a position to pay back, ( not all at once like they want), now they say it's fraud-arrest time.

Hello Monty.

Thank you for your reply to my post.

I am currently trying to find out if this Law Office is registered/licensed to collect in Nova Scotia.

On Friday February 22, 2008 I first contacted the Senior Business Information Officer at the Canada/Nova Scotia Business Centre. This man did a check in the "Registry of Joint Stocks in Nova Scotia" and could not find this Law Office or 310-LOAN as being licensed to collect in Nova Scotia. However, he suggested that I contact the actual department that deals with this sort of request: the Business Licensing Section (part of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations). I called the phone number that was given to me immediately after talking to this man, and I left an urgent voice mail for a representative at that phone#. I haven't heard back from this person yet but I hope to get a call back today. If I don't hear anything this morning (Monday February 25, 2008) then I am going to call again.

**I was informed by the CPLA and others, along with the man at the Canada/Nova Scotia Business Centre that if they are NOT registered in my province then they do not have a legal leg to stand on in terms of collecting from me.

My quest goes on today ......

Thank you for your responses to my posts and if you can provide any information to me I would be sooo appreciative.

I will keep the website up-to-date with postings as I hear back from the agencies that I have contacted.

Regards.

Legend2004, I got your message.

I would add Paul Kupferstein. I'm not sure of the scope of where he collects.
IE.. does he just collect people in Ontario, or all of Canada.??
