The advantages of mutual funds:

some funds specialize in areas that the average investor would have a difficult time investing in, such as stocks of foreign countries and stocks of small cap companies for example.

mutual funds allow for diversification without having to buy a bucket of stocks.

easy to purchase and sell for the small investor.

disadvantages:

70% of mutual funds under perform the market in general. Not a great record.

many mutual funds are bloated. It is difficult to invest a billion dollars.

mutual funds have to declare and pay capital gains once a year on which one will have to pay taxes. If you buy and hold a sound quality stock, that is not the case.

Thanks Foghorn for that recommendation

How's everybody else doing with their mutual funds in 2010.??

Mine aren't doing all that well... Mind you, I don't have alot of money sitting in mutual funds.. so I haven't lost alot of money

Pitiful discussion guys!
If you're looking for a decent mutual fund company...check PH&N (Phillips, Hager and North). Recently merged with RBC.
Management fees are the lowest in town! ...and NO, I dont work for them!
They have decent funds. At present, the High Yeild Bond fund is probably the best bet.
Good luck in 2009

Before investing in mutual funds or any other area,we need to study the market .Meet the persons who have invested in those type of companies.Speak your mind and get a clear picture of your expertise. My sincere advice is that you meet an expert like Monty and get your doubts cleared.
