We use TD Infinite Travel card... there's a big annual fee which is over $200/yr for our two cards but we have Select Service -- no monthly fees for Select Service if you have 5K to stick in there. Right now, with low interest on savings, it's worth our while to do that and pay nothing. We spend just under $4K/m on our visa and we get back somewhere around $1000/yr in travel money. When we book through TD travel agents we get 3X the credits, so the cash adds up quickly.

But of course this is only good if you like to travel a fair bit. I'm sure there's a better card for people in different situations.

My opinion? For cashback, MBNA Smart Cash Platinum MasterCard. For travel points I like, Capital One Aspire World MasterCard.

Here is my comparison of top cash back credit cards in Canada or top rewards credit cards.

I am interested in knowing the forums thoughts on best points credit card. I spend about 2,000 a month on the one credit card and pay it off at end of month. But I am wondering which NO FEE credit card is best.. Any idea/advice out there?

I had a great idea for collecting rewards points... it's probably not new to anybody else :)
I am going to see if I can purchase all of my household expensives using my points credit card.. the power bill, the electricity bill, the water bill, the groceries etc etc
I have the cash to pay these off anyways, so i won't be developing a balance... this way I can collect points with money that I have and am already spending

What I find is that most point redemption options are a bad deal but they structure them in a way where they hope you won't notice. Same goes for using points to redeem merchandises which almost always are at a higher price.

I prefer cash back and points only if I can redeem for a dollar per point conversion.
On Jun 9, 2011, jonathanpaul Said:
hey everyone.. If your reward is in points, the first thing you need to know is how many you get per dollar spent, which is pretty obvious. Then you need to know what the redemption rate is on the points.

If you get one point per dollar and spend, say, $2,000 you will have 2,000 points. If those 2,000 points are worth $20, then your reward rate is 1%. However, those 2,000 points might only be worth $10 or some other amount.

Some of the reward credit cards offer a generous number of points per dollar spent in certain categories. You must figure the actual percentage of the reward and see what you can get for those points.
On Jun 9, 2011, Concordia Said:
I think I would go for a cash back card since it normally do not have any annual fee compared to a travel card which do has a fee. Most travel reward credit cards come with annual fees and these fees can be very steep for me. The high fees can wipe out reward benefit that I will be earning from a travel credit cards.
On Jun 8, 2011, CCHelper Said:
concordia...
it all depends on the following:
do you want cash back, or do you want to travel?
do you want gifts?
how much are you spending in a month?
if you're spending a little bit, then maybe a high annual fee card with more points isn't going to work... it's not cost effective..
On Jun 8, 2011, Concordia Said:
I'm starting to really get into the idea of credit card rewards and want to know if points or cash back is better? Almost all of last decade I used a plain card from my bank that gave 1 point per dollar and every 2,500 points would earn a $25 certificate. Now I realize there are programs for credit card points that give you a higher reward then what it would give with cash. Does that mean points are usually the smartest option?
On Jun 4, 2011, CardShopper Said:
no.. i don't think so... points are kept until the card is cancelled, i believe.. don't quote me... i don't think you have to worry about losing your points if you miss a payment...

a good thing would be to contact your points credit card canada company and ask them what their contract says in regards to this. another option is to read over your contract.. if you don't have a contract for your points card, then call the credit card company and ask them for an updated contract or agreement.

it's a good idea to learn about your rewards point program so that know exactly what you're getting

I have a scenario here: If i own a credit card and i have used the card for 6 months and earn a lot of points already and suddenly missed a payment, Will that affect the amount of points that i have already collected?
