When Should You Consult a Lawyer - Prepaid Legal?
Most people don't consider that there are events in their life that would be vastly improved by the presence of legal counsel. In most people's minds, lawyers are too expensive, and only for the wealthy. However, there are many circumstances that apply to everyone in which having a lawyer is either advisable or necessary.
Some of these situations include:
- Traffic or speeding tickets. A lawyer can often make arrangement that will keep points off your driver's license and keep your insurance costs from rising.
- Tax audits, back taxes, or other tax problems. Tax lawyers specialize in protecting your interests with respect to your taxes, and can represent you to the IRS.
- Purchasing a home. Mortgage contracts invariably protect the bank, rather than the buyer. A lawyer has your interests in mind and can find and change contract clauses to benefit you.
- Starting or purchasing a business. Every aspect of owning a business has legal requirements. A lawyer can help you meet these requirements in such a way that your business benefits from them and you are not overburdened.
- Problems with other businesses or services. If you feel you have been overcharged for a repair or service, or that the item or service you received was not as the company promised, a lawyer can help you get the matter resolved in a way that benefits you.
- A will. You may not think that you have enough assets to make a will necessary or that your spouse will inherit both assets and custody of the children. But you and your spouse may die together, or one of you may become incapacitated. You may not wish your children to go to a former spouse, or you may have savings bonds for the children that you haven't told anyone about. And there is no guarantee that once you are gone, your relatives will honor your wishes for your belongings or your children. A lawyer can help you see to it that your wishes are carried out if something happens to you.
- A living will. As with a will, a living will makes sure that your wishes are carried out even when you are not capable of communicating those wishes. It is the only legally binding way to ensure this; signing your driver's license or telling your family members do not guarantee that you will be treated as you would hope to be. Only a duly prepared and filed living will can address your wishes on extraordinary measures to prolong your life, feeding tubes, life support, or power of attorney that is, who is empowered to make your medical and legal choices for you when you can't.
- Underage misdemeanors. Even good kids can get into trouble. Your child might be implicated in speeding, vandalism, underage drinking, or other problems that you don't want following them for the rest of their lives. Only a lawyer can help your child deal with that situation.
