Buzz Hargrove Canadian Auto Workers Union President is assuring the media that he's going to get the auto workers more. The CAW contract negotiations will soon begin with the auto manufacturers, and he's going to ask for more money and benefits. Buzz Hargrove seems to think the North American auto industry is in really healthy shape.

I was in disbelief when I heard this on the radio. I am not disputing that the auto workers work very hard. They are a skilled work force that works for their money. Alas, General Motors stock almost has junk status. Their sales are sliding and the DOW is threatening to kick them out.
As in any business that has cycles, I think that the auto workers should look forward to enjoying what they've got and even reducing their life style a little.
Here's what I would be interested to know:
? Have the CAW auto workers saved any money over the last 20 years to create their own personal 'future pension'?
? Have the CAW auto workers upgraded their houses every 5 years like the average Canadian family?
? Have the CAW auto workers become so accustomed to their 'solid job security' that they haven't done much financial planning at all?
? What would the CAW auto workers do if they actually had to reduce their life styles and take a pay and benefit cut from the large auto manufacturers? This might become the reality in the next few years.
Buzz Hargrove is obviously doing his best to work in the best interest of his union workers. I can't fault him for that. I would hate to liken the CAW to the NHL lockout which was unprecendented this year. The NHL fiasco just shows that we're in new financial times and that anything can happen.
I wish the Canadian auto workers and the auto manufacturers the best in their negotiations. Ultimately I also hope that they give myself and the rest of Canada the best quality car at the best price!!
