What is a Market Place?

A market place is a place or space which is allocated for the running or functioning of the market. It might mean literally or metaphorically. It might also refer to the place where products and services are provided by the producers and are bought by the consumers.
It might vary from place to place depending upon the necessities of the public in that region. This term is also used in trademark law context to indicate the equivalent exchange between the producers and consumers. The goods produced for sale completely depends upon the consumer environment.

There are a variety of market places ranging from street markets which are also called wholesale markets to internet market places. In case of wholesale markets, the goods that are manufactured by factories and many such institutions are sold to traders. The goods are not sold directly to the members of the public. These traders generally include caterers and small shopkeepers. These traders in turn increase the value and sell it to the members of the public. These wholesale markets have most of the goods that are required for daily use by the public. Some market places sell meat, fish along with fruits and rations needed for every day cooking. These goods are not sold in shops. Whole sale markets always involve only street vendors. That is the goods are sold on the street and the goods are very fresh. These market places are very popular. One of the popular several centuries old wholesale markets are Smithfield Market and Billingsgate Fish market which are located in London, England.

Internet market places are those websites which sell goods and services online. These markets have internet access and allow the customers to choose the goods online and buy them via credit cards. The payment is done through online credit card system. The most popular internet marketplace is eBay. It is a huge auction house website for all kinds of products. It is globally available and anything and everything is available in this website. These goods are auctioned and the highest bidder gets the product. This website makes a lot of money through these auctions. This website completely thrives on the fact that it connects the producer and the buyer from different locations on the web. They might be in disparate locations but they are still able to buy and sell products through the internet and this website is famous for hosting such sales and auctions.

eBay is not the only internet market place which is available on the web. There are many other similar markets which thrive on the web. They are all based upon connecting the buyer and seller who are at two different locations. The formation of such online market places often occurs due to social and economic needs and conditions. It all depends upon the needs and the interest of the public. If what they wish for is available nearby then they would not buy from the internet. Hence it depends upon the availability of goods too.
