What Is A Living Will |

![]() What is a Living Will?
Canada has a very unique registry for living will. It is the only country to have a very unique way of writing a living will. When a living person becomes ill or is suffering from injuries then he or she has the right to control their own medical treatment. This is what the registry of living will is about. In living will, the ill or injured person may choose whether they want full medical attention to recover completely or they might choose to limit their medical treatment. They might choose the latter in case they are beyond treatment or they are heavily injured. Such a will gives the person a right to choose and make their own decision in case they are incapacitated. This will make sure that everyone, rather people who matter, are aware of the ill person’s decision and cannot change it. The person who wishes to make such a will may employ or designate a person called “proxy” who can make sure that the incapacitated person gets what he wishes and ensures that nobody tries to intervene with his wishes. This helps in avoiding lots of problems as the ill person’s family might not be happy with his or her decision in case they don’t opt to have full medical treatment. But the family cannot intervene to change their decision. The proxy will make sure of that. Even if the person dies due to his decision he will take sole responsibility as stated in his living will. These wills are made when the person is sane and in his mind. The incapacitated person should be totally aware of what he is doing and should be in his senses while making it. They are used when the issuer is alive and he can change it whenever he wants it or when circumstances change. Such wills are also called living documents as they are used when the issuer is alive. The seriously ill people want to have the right to decide for themselves how they want their treatment to proceed. These wills help them to choose and gives them a right to do so. The completely incapacitated people want to decide for themselves considering their circumstances and their family’s condition. Lots of reasons help them make a choice such as financial background or serious illness which cannot be treated or to be rid of the pain quickly. They want to ensure that their wishes are known to their family members before they become incapable of telling their wishes. Their decisions are generally affected by their family’s condition and they want to protect them from facing similar anguish or they want to save them the misery considering their circumstances in life. Their exists a registry in Canada for such a will which keeps up with the legislative changes and help the ill people make their own decisions and makes sure nobody can change the will without consulting the issuer and obtaining his assurance. |
