What are Lottery Winnings? A lottery is a form of gambling. Lottery tickets are printed with randomized numbers and sold and a winning ticket is picked at random. Some governments go to the extent of banning it while some others run state lotteries! Where governments do run lotteries, they have proved to be one of the greatest revenue spinners. However the tax alone can be astronomical. Normally lottery winnings attract almost 30 - 40 % tax. In Canada, lotteries and sweepstakes were banned until 1967. Though the mayor of Montreal tried to recuperate losses suffered by the city by hosting the World Trade Fair, the federal government felt it was illegal. But there were appeals and debates across Canada for and against the lotteries. Only in 1969 it was made legal, by an Amendment to the Canada Criminal Code.
Today there are 2 major lotteries operating in Canada, the Lotto Max and the Lotto 6/49. These lotteries are run and regulated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of five state lottery agencies. The lottery winnings are not taxed by the federal government but the provincial governments are not going to forego a slice of the pie. Nowadays as lotteries have become legal, people are coming together in groups and buying tickets, so that when they win, they will win big. For example the highest payout in Canadian history was in 2005 to a group of 17 co-workers from Alberta. their winning ticket was worth upwards of $54 million!
This is just an example to explain why people buy lottery tickets even though the chances of winning are slim to none. Psychologists feel it is the fantasy of winning and becoming wealthy that encourages people to keep on buying them time after time. Though as people can walk into any convenience store and buy tickets or go online to buy them, and when people can select their own ticket numbers, there is inevitably going to be tampering, fraud etc to cheat genuine winners out of their lottery winnings. It is human nature to try and gain from others' labor.
For instance, in Ontario, a Mr. Edmonds walked into a store to check if he had won the prize money. The shop clerk told him he had not won. then she and her husband claimed the quarter million dollar prize, using the poor man's wining serial numbers. So some provincial governments have come together and set up a task force to look into the lottery winnings and on ways to strictly monitor and regulate them so that these instances do not recur.
One point to be remembered when you win in the lotteries is that the federal government does not tax you on your winnings, but any earnings from those winnings is taxable. If you deposit the winnings in a bank and earn interest, you have to pay tax on the interest earned.
