I have read lately about the AIG being taken over by Bank of Montreal.

AIG was really affected during the recession that took place years ago. With that, they have lost a lot of assets and was not able to hold there ground. This led to the big decision that it would be under the control of BMO which was consistently with their productivity and could somehow bring AIG back to its place again.
