About eight months ago I received a call from a collection agency. They claim I owe on three different accounts all from the year 2001 and they want their money!
Problem is that I don't have clue what these debts are. Yes, I did having a long standing relationship w/ the financial institution that they are claiming, but I never even had two of the three products they are trying to collect upon. The third, a car loan, was secured w/ the vehicle it was taken out for. This loan was closed, the account paid in full and the chattel removed when the vehicle was sold. This loan actually still appears on my credit report as "Closed - Account Paid" from 1999.
I'm at a loss. I've spent countless hours on the phone to try and figure out what these supposed debts might be including a lengthy call to the originating financial institution who sold these debts to a collection agency (who sold them to the current collection agency). They've purged their records and the only advice they could offer was for me to deal w/ the collection agency.
To further matters, the collection agency has not been able to offer any proof to validate these debts - but they sure want their money! As of earlier this week I was told that "I've left them no choice" - they are going to trace my employment and send a letter to my employer.
I am a credit watch subscriber w/ both equifax and transunion and two of the three debts do not show up on my report (probably because they don't exist). The third shows paid. There are also no accounts with collections and I've ruled out any identity theft.
So lets say that I was kidnapped by aliens and have amnesia which has erased all memory of my ill doings from 2001 o_0
These (rather questionable) debts are from 2001 - is there anything this collection agency can do to forcibly collect?
Why would they send a letter to my employer?
