Purely out of personal curiosity - how could something like this happen?

Computer error?

And how is it that the original creditor cannot provide any information whatsoever regarding these supposed debts? Shouldn't they have an obligation to do so? I mean they've "sold" them to an agency. It seems a little like selling air, or a plot on Mars and I wouldn't really care except in the selling of these supposed debts they've also "sold" my personal information which has opened me up to the constant harassment that has ensued.

Doesn't seem particularly fair and I am rather annoyed (understatement) that I can do nothing about it. Well nothing aside cutting these snapper heads a big cheque for money I'm 100% positive that I do not owe.

The debts have long been written off and the original debtors have gotten their money back for the most part through tax write offs etc. The collection agency bought these for pennies on the dollar then ask for full amount. If they collected a hundred bucks on each they would be making money. Again they will try for years....just hang up....no requirement to talk to the bottom feeders.

Thanks TJ - from my research on the Ont. SOL, that's what I figured. But I'm not an expert by any means and it concerned me that this agency was pursuing this with such enthusiasm.

I hope they stop calling. The messages are nasty. Think Rosie Perez as a collection agent. This place has about five of them.

I guess its that old adage "if you throw enough *poop at a wall some it will stick"?

I'm not a dead beat - I'd gladly pay up if these claims made any sense whatsoever.

No...all the debts you speak of even if they did exist then have now all past the statute of limitation. There is nothing they can legally do but continue to hound you. They can not contact your employer for any other purpose but to confirm employment. They can not say why they are looking for you. If they do you can file a lawsuit against them if you chose.
They are simply trying to intimidate you as they know they can do nothing. Just hang up.....they get paid by commision and there is no money in hang up calls....they will eventually stop.

Collection Agency Advice on questionable debts from 2001

Postby BlindSidedOne » Thu Dec 15, 2011 07:56:24 AM

About eight months ago I received a call from a collection agency. They claim I owe on three different accounts all from the year 2001 and they want their money!

Problem is that I don't have clue what these debts are. Yes, I did having a long standing relationship w/ the financial institution that they are claiming, but I never even had two of the three products they are trying to collect upon. The third, a car loan, was secured w/ the vehicle it was taken out for. This loan was closed, the account paid in full and the chattel removed when the vehicle was sold. This loan actually still appears on my credit report as "Closed - Account Paid" from 1999.

I'm at a loss. I've spent countless hours on the phone to try and figure out what these supposed debts might be including a lengthy call to the originating financial institution who sold these debts to a collection agency (who sold them to the current collection agency). They've purged their records and the only advice they could offer was for me to deal w/ the collection agency.

To further matters, the collection agency has not been able to offer any proof to validate these debts - but they sure want their money! As of earlier this week I was told that "I've left them no choice" - they are going to trace my employment and send a letter to my employer.

I am a credit watch subscriber w/ both equifax and transunion and two of the three debts do not show up on my report (probably because they don't exist). The third shows paid. There are also no accounts with collections and I've ruled out any identity theft.

So lets say that I was kidnapped by aliens and have amnesia which has erased all memory of my ill doings from 2001 o_0

These (rather questionable) debts are from 2001 - is there anything this collection agency can do to forcibly collect?

Why would they send a letter to my employer?
