The whole thing is, if you don't listen properly, they've sucked you into a contract for 3-5 years at a higher rate than you would have gotten going straight through the company, i.e. Enbridge, Toronto Hydro, and there is nothing you can do because they use your voice as an electronic signature....sneaky!

Hey Laura,

This is an excellent case example of why it's always important to be careful to get confirmation of whom you're speaking to on the phone.

I can sort of understand the conversation you're describing. It's interesting that a company will use telephone marketing in that manner.

When somebody asks you for your personal information over the phone, it's best to ask for their phone number, their company name and tell them you'll call them back. Before calling back, make sure to verify the information they gave.

Generally speaking, I don't take calls from telephone solicitors any more.

Thanks for sharing that laura!!

Hey folks, I came across something the other day that I thought I would share. I currently have my "electric/hydro" with direct energy that I never agreed to in the first place, but they said I did, I didn't bother disputing it as it was quite low. Well it's up for renewal & I got a call the other day...and this is where they get you, because if you say o.k., yes or any sign of aggrement on the phone your voice is regarded as a "signature". Well it went something like this (telemarketer from the US btw & really fast talker) HER: "blah, blah, blah can I go over some personal information for verification? ME: No I don't want to renew, HER: well ms ___ we don't want to lose you as a customer so we can offer you blah, blah blah can I go over some personal information for verification? ME: No I don't want to renew. Then she said thanks & hung up. HERE'S WHERE I THINK THEY GET YOU!! As soon as you say YES, to the verification process they take that as your signature & they automatically sign you up. So this is a heads up to people....PS., I will never be going to a "reseller of Elec. or Gas" again!!!

Wills are meant to protect your assets... The more assets you have the more protection you need.

A will is your direction of how you would have things go in the event of your death.

The majority of this cost is spent with the lawyer helping you decide what you own, and who you want to be the executors.

It might be a good idea to get that Self Counsel book on

Wills and estates. For $20 it will give you a good idea of what you need, to start.

Hi Laura,

Wills are legal, and I haven't created a legal discussion area.

Do we want a legal discussion area? I won't be able to administer it because I'm not a lawyer!!

This is as good a place I guess.

Keep in mind, if you're talking about legal stuff, it's good to talk about it here and get some input. It's best to get real legal advice from lawyers. Sometimes it's good to spend the money as this type of thing affects your financial foundation.

NO WAY, BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!! Spend the extra bit of money on a lawyer or you will be sorry. I can almost guarantee you that relatives you've never heard of will start coming out of the woodwork when your father dies and could likely probate (contest) the will. Even if this doesn't happen, you can make all sorts of legal errors that aren't anticipated in a "one size fits all" kit. Besides, banks are far more amenable to releasing assets in accounts when it's done through a lawyers office. Otherwise you might have to wait a long time to access funds. I know all this from experience. Should be cheaper than $700 for a simple will, though I'm not sure about present rates. My father paid $200 in the early eighties.

I'm not sure where I should post this, so I'll start here and then maybe Monty you can decide. Sorry it is kinda financial. My father (ret) went to see his financial advisor yesterday and she told him not to spend $700 bucks on a will and just leave everything to the "Estate" and name me as the executor. I have a brother in UK. I don't feel comfortable having him do this because people start coming out of the wood work when they know money is around, and it could tie his "estate" up for a very long time not to mention legal fees. What do you think? Should I tell him just to buy the "will" package & G&T or Staples? I need some solid advice please!!

Well, I don't mind, but I don't think Chuck is going to take kindly to it.

Damn! Just when I was gonna challenge Wayne Macleod to a MMA match. Just like they have a K1/Pride mix match, we could have a CMA/TCR mix match. That way, it wouldn't be off topic.

The winner could take on Deanna Natale, except it wouldn't be polite to hit a lady - oohhhhh, wait a minute.

This is a polite way to have you and Ray discuss all of the matters regarding MMA!!

The common thing we share here is that we're all Canadian and it would be nice to talk about Canadian stuff with other Canadians!!

Please talk about whatever you feel like in this area.

As I mentioned with the Buy & Sell section... there are people who need products and services and are actively searching for them. I don't want to be actively selling items in the main discussion area.

Similarly, It's nice to concentrate the collection agencie etc talk in the main discussion area, and it's also nice to have a separate area to talk about MMA, cooking, the weather etc!!

Talk away Peabo!!

Cheers
