In April 2011 I retired and moved from Ontario to New York and I now have US permanent resident alien (green card) status.
I am 60 yrs old and collect CPP ($500) plus a defined-benefit pension from Ontario ($3,400) that goes into my RBC bank account from which CIBC gets the $700 mortgage payment.
In Sept. 2010 I rented out my Ontario house on which there is a $170K mortgage with CIBC. Payments are current but property tax is $4k in arrears.
The tenant fell way behind on rent and disappeared leaving the house in very bad shape. I can't afford the repairs and selling "as is" would probably net only $140k.
What should I do?
One idea is to redirect my pension, close the RBC account and "walk away". That doesn't feel good to me and furthermore, I wonder if my pensions or my small ($30k) RRSP could be in jeopardy.
Note, in 2010 I completed my obligations under a consumer proposal which we had structured to avoid losimg my house. That is now water under the bridge and my future is a life with my wonderful new wife in the USA. I just can't carry this financial burden anymore.
