Short answer, NO THEY CAN'T, at least not until they get a judgement against you. They would have to sue you and for $2,500 it would be in Small Claims Court.
If you haven't done so already, request a Consumer Disclosure Report from both Equifax and TransUnion. You can download their respective Request Forms from their websites, complete the form and mail them. Your total cost is a postage stamp. You should receive these Reports within 3-4 weeks. Revue each Report carefully and see if any collections are reported.
Report back on this website if you have any questions or concerns. In the meantime, don''t bother to talk to Contact Resources until you receive these reports. Also, don;t send any money until you know where you stand.
