If you call Canadian Tire Credit in Welland, they'll likely refer you back to CRS, assuming the account is still with them, for settlement.

Canadian Tire or CRS can't touch your money in any other institution so you're safe. I thought the account might have been with one of the major banks.

If you want to settle for moral reasons (which are more important than financial), you could offer them 40% maybe. Perhaps a good bit less given it's age.

P.S. Needless to say, making a payment on this type of debt DOES NOT restart the Equifax or Trans Union 6 year reporting period nor revive any expired limitiation period.

P.S.(2) Also NEVER settle with a collection agency without FIRST obtaining a presigned agreement that the debt is in full and final settlement of the account. Come to an agreeement over the phone and then get them to send it to you in writing before sending money. Collection agents are notorious for this ruse, particularly the full patched members.

"...From these other posts I am very hesitant to call CRS if there is a 6 year moratorium on the life of credit card debt."

Well, not exactly. There's a 2 year limitation period on getting sued; a 6 year limitation period for the delinquent item being on your credit reports; no limitation period (in Ontario) on how long the creditor can pursue the debt outside the courts; and, perhaps more significantly, no limitation period on the Right of Offset" for the creditor, or any of its wholly owned subsidiaries, to withdraw funds - without advance notice to you - from ANY kind of account you hold with them.

Moreover, most credit card lenders stipulate when you sign their application that the primary cardmember, along with anyone else who has been issued a card at the request of that person, and with the consent of the primary cardholder, may be "jointly and severally liable" for the whole balance.

That quite possibly includes interest up until now, and NOT when the card was sent to collections DESPITE whatever outstanding balance currently shows on the bureau file. In other words, I'd be careful where I parked my money from now on.

If it were me, I'd contact CRS and find out exactly who owns that account and be leery of having any financial instruments, including credit cards with the same institution, until the matter was completely resolved.

never had a crappy tire card.

I suspect my ex kept a card when we split... in my name maxed it out and had the billing address changed. Could be anything TD, BMO, CIBC.... VISA or MC who knows. We each had one from every bank at one time.

How would I find out which bank and card it is? The credit report did not say anything about a credit card I am only guessing. It only reference CRS and an account number.

From these other posts I am very hesitant to call CRS if there is a 6 year moratorium on the life of credit card debt.

Any other suggestions?

If the last time you made a payment on this account was roughly seven years ago; I would call the creditor to get proof and have this item removed. I would not call contact resources to initiate a settlement.

I had this debt about 7 years ago while going through divorce moved and forgot about it.

Went in to get qualified for a mortgage. Told me this should be removed.

They appear on my credit report for about $4400. Do I call and initiate a settlement or is there some other approach.
