I know I am going to be in for a rough ride over the next few months. I've spent a lot of time reading posts and have found some great advice and even in it doesn't help me know it will help me when it's time to try and fix things at the end of it all. Thanks for the answer Montyloree...

The point of asking them to provide their license number is to ensure that they are who they say they are... and... to be honest... I've dealt with at least one collection agent who WASN'T licensed in that province.

Sometimes what happens is that the agent is so new, the company wants to wait a few weeks to see if the agent is going to stick around, and they don't license them.

The other point of asking the collection agent for their license is that it gives you control of the phone call. When the collection agent starts demanding payment, you can take a bit of control by asking them for identification verification. This means you won't get bullied.

Montyloree I have a question, This is all new to me as I am just starting to go down this road of having to deal with collection agencies. I am dealing with Collectcorp and I have seen many other posts here so do I need to ask them for there license? and do I need to ask each time if the agent on the phone is licensed? I assumed that they are since there are many posts of other people dealing with them. Thank You

By law the collection agency/collection agent must be licensed to deal in your province... if they're not they can pay a fine etc...

You can simply tell them that they need to provide proof that they're licensed before you'll talk to them... if they don't provide that proof, you don't have to talk to them.

If you want true verification, contact consumer protection and ask them ... actually you'll need to call the licensing branch... the ones who license the collection agencies and agents

Collectors License Number

I want to get a collector's licence number and so I called him. He would not give it to me. Nor would his supervisor. Is this legal. Don't they have to give it to me.
