Check the tenancy laws in Ontario for this.

In BC the landlords have to go through arbitration before sending a claim to collection agencies but many of the shady landlords send the accounts to shady collection agencies who will attempt to recover these knowing the landlord didn't follow the proper procedure.

It's worth checking out because it seems weird any landlord could just file any amount with a collection agency and have it listed on someones credit with no proof.

We rented downtown toronto, stayed for about 6 months and gave notice we were leaving. anyhow 3 months later a collection agency notifies us we owe a little over $3000. because they could not find someone to rent out the place after 3 months. Has anyone had a similar situation? What did you do? Is it worth it for the collections to take me to court? I have a registered letter that I want to mail and fax to the agency stating I want to dispute it in court. I just want to know if anyone has had similar problem and what happened in the end.
