I know that I probably don't belong on this thread however this is just another example of kind of disharmony than talking about. fighting with collection agencies is so un-peaceful, it's stressful, is just not good for the soul.

This is one of the products of the credit industry. There needs to be more peace in the world.

They said it would be paid after the completion of monthly payments.
Currently they are paying 300 a month to them but it is a hardship for them to pay this again.

hi travis..

it really important to keep any written proofs in case something comes up having the same problem just like what you parents have experienced..

its one way of letting the collection agency remember that your parents have already made the payment and everything was already settled..

another question travis.. after the second payment that your parents have made, did the agency told your parents that the account is completely closed?

I'm not sure if they received anything other than cancelled cheques. But its been so long they don't have those anymore either.

Its a good lesson about keeping important papers forever I suppose

hi travis..

just a simple question.. after your parents paid the first $4000, what did the collection agency gave you?

is there any written letter or a notification that they have received the payment coming from your parents and everything is already settled?

new collection agency says account unpaid?

Postby travkind » Thu Jul 01, 2010 01:00:38 PM

My parents are have issues due to a very old credit card account. They came to an agreement to pay about half the balance ($4000) with a collection agency about 10 years ago. They paid as agreed and thought they were done with the issue.

Well, about a year ago they get a call from a collection agency wanting to collect on this account again. They say the balance is over $10,000!!

My dad explained that it was paid off many years ago. The agent said they bought this debt from the last colection agency and that they are liable for it.

Unfortunately, they don't have any cancelled cheques or anything because it was so long ago. Also, the debt isn't showing up on their Equifax bureau.

I told them to tell the collection agency to prove how you owe this money and to not pay a dime until they do. But they got tired of getting the phone calls and started sending cheques after the agency said that they only had to pay a "portion" to clear the debt. (still about 4000...again)

Any ideas what to do? Did they screw up their statute of limitations by starting to pay this again?

I believe in paying debts,,,however they are on a limited income and have already paid the agreed upon amount once before through a different company.

Thanks

travis
