The back story is i took out a student loan a more then few years ago to go to university, thinking with a degree i would be able to get a decent job and at least pay the interest on them until i could earn enough to start paying them off.just before i finished i fell ill with a chronic disease, and was unable to work because of this illness,i still have it and at the moment i am on disability social assistance. about a little over a year ago i had to default on all my student loans(federal and provincial).
since then i have been harrased by the banks(who have sent my loans to the very rude and insulting collections agencies) and i have canada revenue also on my back. i have sent proof of what little amount i am receiving and it is barely enough to survive through the cost of daily living much less having any extra to pay off debts. i am the main caregiver for my ill elderly mother(i also pay her room and board). these collections agencies are calling at all times of the day with a recording, often more then once waking her up from her much needed sleep. i have asked them not to call and the reason why or call only once a week(cause nothing is going to change) but they tell me it's the law that they have to call.i don't know what to do, the constant phone calls are driving us both nuts, i'm starting to get serious anxiety issues which is making my chronic illness worse.they are telling me to borrow money from relatives i repeatedly tell them if my relatives had the money i wouldn't have needed the loan in the first place! with the interest building up i now owe close to 50,000
if i had the money i would pay it off but i don't. what can i do? what can they do to me? i am ignoring the phone calls for now because nothing i do stops them but i don't known how much longer i can deal with this!
ETA: i do not qualify for any of the programs available to help or so i am told. i have gone to financial advisors who were no help whatsoever.
