I have almost left my chip card in the machine at the bank a few times.. Once you place it in the machine, and then get talking with the teller... it could be easy to leave behind... I guess we're all used to the swipe type actions where you keep the card in your hand and then put it back in your wallet.

When Donella Hoffman went to the Canadian Tire returns desk last week to retrieve her forgotten debit card, she was surprised at how many other people had left theirs behind.

"It was quite something," she said, "when the woman from behind the counter pulled out a thick stack of dozens of TD transaction cards and said, 'These are just the ones from TD.' "

Hoffman said she left the card behind because she isn't accustomed to her new chip-enabled debit card.
