I was 30ish at the time when I applied for a 200.00 secured card with a 200.00 limit. I did not have "bad credit" I had no record at all. I did send them an email through their site after 3 years and got a somewhat rude reply saying that a return of my security was not guaranteed and may never be returned unless I close the account or something to that affect. They helped me establish some credit which I am thankful for. I have 2 other credit cards without a balance, and use one for everything for the points. The 59 dollars they get me for is neutral as the 100's of purchase checks they send me save me time and they are not charged as a cash advance. I would like my 200.00 back though.

As for financial problems, I had no record at all as I foolishly believed I would not need it. If they extended me a worthwhile card I would be using it.

I will contact them and see what they have to offer. I have 4 years with them though and canceling my longest running credit card might not be the best thing to do. Thanks.-D.

First off, I'm surprised that Capital One has not refunded you your deposit yet after increasing your credit limit. If I were you, I will call them to find out when they will refund your deposit. Also, if your credit score is at 725, it sounds like you have already passed whatever financial issues you have had previously. If this is your case, you can also call Capital One and ask them to waive the $59 annual fee charged to your account. I had the same experience with them back in 2008. After they increased my credit limit from $200 to $600, they also refunded my deposit a month later. When they charged me the annual fee in November, I just gave them a call to ask if they can waive the annual fee and they did two years in a row.

I got the secured credit card with Capital One in 2005. Paid all purchases in full every month and after three years (2008) deposit was refunded and credit limit was increased. This year in April, I emailed them to ask if I can "upgrade" my credit card from Gold Card to Air Miles Card, and the response was No. So, after 5 years, I decided to close my Capital One Account this April and applied for another credit card elsewhere. So far my credit score (772) has not been affected by the closure of the account.

I hope the above information helped you in making your decision.

Capital One secured card and security return 200.00

Postby checkered » Wed Jun 02, 2010 07:56:16 PM

Four years ago I applied for a secured card after years of not having any. I have a secured card from cap one that is 700.00 with a 200.00 security. They still have my security after 4 years. I got a letter to increase it to 2200.00. Will I get my security back?. I had a credit rating of 725, 2 years ago and now have 2 other cards the highest being 4500.00 and have not carried a balance once.

Is there any chance they will finally give my my security back? They also say I am not eledgeable for a low interest card and I would like one to carry a small balance for short periods of time. I pay 59.00 dollars a year for my account but pay my rent through there "purchase" checks which saves me 60.00 dollars a year because I would otherwise have to purchase money orders.

Should I cancel it and apply for a low interest card or should I keep it because it is the longest report on my credit history?
