Did you get it in writing from them that it's settled??

I know collectors that would say 'pay me 25% and I'll never call you again' then they take the payment and close the file knowing it will go to another agency. They type in some notes saying the person refused to pay the rest and close it.

Just saying, they're sneaky bastards.

I thank you all for your time and comments. I would like to say that I managed to, not sure how, come up with the funds and make the two payments they insisted on. I phoned on the last date with the confirmation number and then got the "when will you be making the final payment?" I was phoning for the final payment confirmation. She then informed me that the interest was to be included in the payments to which I got out my notes (used to be a secretary) and read back each and every conversation, date and time we had as well as the names of others spoken to and informed her that the numbers agreed upon for the two payments were given to me by here, verbatim, and never once was a allowance mentioned for interest. She stuttered a bit, put me on hold, I got cut off, phoned back, stayed on hold and then finally got her to admit that we had not discussed that and that I had fulfilled the terms of our agreement and they would write off the interest. I guess maybe she went back to listen to the tapes (I am glad I know shorthand for conversations).

I am done and can say I don't ever want that nervous nightmare again!!!! Thanks to you all.

thetruth10,

Those pipedreams might be believable to some members on here but you will not fool this member. The chances of getting a low settlement from a collection agency are slim to none, but if you approach the creditor the chances are much greater. If you read my posts you will see I have settled with the creditors for as low as 10%.The public needs to know that they can go over the collection agencies head and settle their debt directly with the creditor and thats the truth ruth lol..

"Believe it or not, we are only really trying to assist you in resolving your debt! "

There's a load from the heards rear! Been practicing the deployment of yer rubbish for a while now I see.

The Truth is, you collection agents are only interested in one thing, that's making your commissions off of the funds you collect, AND THAT'S ALL!! Hence why these agencies typically hire top notch neanderthals to work the phones.

Infuriating one C/A at a time..

be very careful of the advice you have recieved here. I have worked for NCO and in the industry for 14 years and can tell you that yes, some banks will sue for 2600.00. This is not a debt that has been overlooked as if it has reached the collection agency it has been outstanding for some time. Contacting the bank may work, but the likelyhood of getting a settlement from them is low. Your best option is to speak with NCO, advise them you can pay 1/2 on this date and bal on this date. answer all questions asked. Believe it or not, we are only really trying to assist you in resolving your debt! Chances are it had not hit your credit bureau yet and part of the demand for payment is to help you avoid this.

They wouldn't sue you for $2600 in Ontario....they're just being bully's as usual.

Even if they spend the $500 - $600 on a statement of claim and a couple hundred more to get a judgment the time period for that is about the same as when you're saying you will pay them. If not longer.

You're allowed to talk to the ombudsman at Scotiabank and let them know you're having a problem. It will basically annoy the agency a bit that a complaint was filed and most likely they'll chill out.

Sincerely.

Why not contact the bank and see if they would be interested in settling the account for say 50%, assuming you can pull it together in one payment. If they opt to accept your proposal, be sure to obtain a settlement offer from the bank before making any payment on the debt.

Thanks, they told me that if I didn't pay up by the end of the month that Scotia was going to start legal proceedings. I am a little nervous about that one. I have spoken to a few people that have said that if I make a payment or two that it will be a "good faith" move. I know I can make the full payment between this and next month, I just need a little more time and she keeps telling me that the 30th is the deadline and she will be informing the bank and starting legal action. I know a person who has a credit card debt of over $8,000 in third party collection with legal action threatened for about six months now. I just can't believe they would start action if I can pay at least half or more of the debt this month and the rest next month.
