I had a nervous breakdown in 2004 from which I am still recovering from. I am on a provincial disability. At the time I was owed about $15K from clients who were not paying.
About a year before MBNA sent me a preapproved application for a Mastercard with a $6500 limit. I didn't need it at that time but as the date of my breakdown was approaching I was incapable of working and sso used this as a line of credit in an emergency. (I might also point out that someone from MBNA call centre simply asked me how much money I made. No further investigation was persued. I told them xx thousand as at that time I was).
My MBNA account has written off by MBNA but the collection has drifted from one agency to another each year. Now I owe $6700. Do I still have to pay the current collection agency? MBNA wrote it off in 2008. I tell each one I am on a disability and usually haven't enough money each month to cover my bare living expenses.
So, how should I handle this? I once heard that if a collection agency hasn't talked toyou for a year or more then you don't hae to pay.
I want to be able to get a secured credit card soon as I am going back to work for myself. I could wait till the end of six years but am prepared to make some reparation. Whta next?
