Hello all,
I have perused this site from time to time, first time I had to post.
My wife and I recently signed with a Debt Settlement company, we verbally agreed to pay $1000 for 5 years (60 months). We made 2 payments, before being told we need to pay $90 extra a month. This caught us off guard. The original explanation I was given was that this is because the estimated numbers we sent them were lower than the actual, I looked and showed her that the difference was only $9. Furthermore, I have done the math and they are forcing us to pay all of our debt over 52 months rather than the 60 we agreed to.
In their contract it states that they cannot make contractual changes without our consent. I was told that "we are making you aware", you can either agree to pay the new payment or we will contact your creditors and tell them that you are not making the payment and they will cancel the program.
I spoke to Consumer Protection Ontario and they are essentially a toothless agency that cannot enforce anything.
What can we do? We cannot a lawyer, my wife is in tears, she has heart problems already and now they are essentially holding us hostage so that we lose our home and all we have worked for.
Please help, any helpful advise is appreciated.
