Birdman55: I can perhaps throw some insight into why it "came to their attention that you were employed"....

Remember that C/A's do both soft and/or hard pulls on your credit reports with Equifax and TransUnion (inquiries). Even if you've been on ODSP for some time, but working prior to that, your employer information sometimes gets listed on the first page of your credit report(s) under the Identification section.

To correct this, and to stop these fishers of information at the pass, you can simply forward your current un-employed status (or disability) and get them to update your report(s) accordingly.

I did this in person and my files were updated instantly. I imagine that you could send a letter in or fax or perhaps even call them to do this same thing on your reports.

I would keep an eye on your phone number,i had a phone number through vonage and my number is from an area 60 miles away and most of my family didn't even know it yet they were able to find it. They use all kinds of tricks and lies to get numbers as they don't have a life so they have lots of time to do it.

As long as you haven't been making payments on the debt or acknowledging it in writing over the last few years, it sounds like it's well beyond the Statute of Limitations now. That said, this collection agency has no legal remedy to collect on these funds anymore. My advise would be to keep your blood pressure down and ignore the calls and their letters.

FTR: A few weeks ago I started receiving calls regarding an MBNA debt that I defaulted on 8 or 9yrs ago. I took the first couple of calls, let the agents try and work me up, then flipped the cards on them (jokingly treated them like 976 girls), let them get frustrated and eventually hang up. Oddly enough, I haven't had any calls from them in a couple days now... Not suggesting you pull this stunt, too, but thought I'd share seeing how we defaulted in a similar time frame.

Good luck.

Preferred Credit Resources/Collect Com/Scotiabank

Postby birdman55 » Tue May 28, 2013 07:54:36 PM

Hi there
I am sure you answer a question similar to this 100 times a week, so I apologize for the repetiitiveness.

I had debt from early 2000's, at least a decade ago since even last activity, and in particular one with Bank of Nova Scotia that doesn't show up on credit report. However, starting over the winter I was getting very unprofessional phone calls from a company who were so rude and childish I ended up blocking all of their numbers because I figured it as a scam.

Problem solved, I had thought, until I got an 'urgent notice' about the debt from Collect Com, acting on behalf of Preferred Credit Resources, who have bought the debt.

Now aside from the fact that this debt is still alive, I also do have a problem with the fact that the letter suggests it has come to their attention that I'm employed and 'presume' I'm in a position to pay the outstanding debt.

Not only am I on ODSP, I live in social housing on a full housing subsidy, so that's definitely not true. Is the claim to know I'm working just a blanket fishing line being thrown out there hoping to bait me? I've done a tiny bit of research but the results of seeing that this kind of debt purchasing is allowed has enraged me to look any further.

If you could please give me a heads up on what I can do or who I need to speak to I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks for your time and have a great day/night
