This
article in the Toronto Star is a few years old it made me curious.
The banking institution in Canada is pretty sound. You rarely if ever hear of a bank doing something rogue or grey area, at least in the media. (Maybe they're just better at concealing it.)
Here is a whole page in The Star's website that deals with problems with the payday loan industry.
As always, I express caution to our readers in using payday loan services. They've been showing up in the news lately with court cases and class action law suits etc.
Payday loan companies are regulated provincially which means that law suits in Saskatchwan are not recognized in New Brunswick. Also, the provincial Consumer Protection departments are only trained to handle problems in their area.
Payday loans are relatively new in Saskatchewan for example. I've seen Money Mart advertising more aggressively in the last few months which is going to raise their awareness more . I've also seen payday loan companies popping up at every corner in some parts of the city.
When I've talked to the Saskatchewan Consumer Protection, they haven't dealt very much with payday loan companies complaints. My guess is because people don't know they can complain about them.
Just as we recommend reading and understanding contracts with all creditors, it's important that people who use payday loan companies read and understand the agreements with payday loan companies.
I'll bring more information about payday loan companies in Canada as I get it.
