What will happen as this happened when my dad passed away a few years ago. My mom who was in charge of my dad estate submitted all the bills she had to the lawyer to help her settle the estate. In you case the collection company may try to submit the bill to the estate I am not sure how they fall into place re list of creditor My dad left a large estate and all the bills got paid so you may have to pay the bill depends on how large an estate your mom had left

Most collection agencies will just ask for a copy of the death certificate, close the file and send it back to the original creditor. That is if the debtor has nothing.

If there is an estate they can sometimes get some money that way since the debts have to be paid off from the estate.
