Everyone on this thread has given some positive feedback (except for Grand Theft Auto...hide it? Terrible and irresponsible advice).
I'd just like to add something:
By returning the vehicle you are defaulting on your contract and you will be penalized for it. Obviously avoiding that is the best option for your credit.
But since you have a family emergency, so returning the vehicle might be the best option for you.
It was suggested that you return the vehicle and be up front with the lender. While they may not settle with you initially, it will not hurt you to explain your situation and your good intentions.
At the very least you will avoid extra collection or repossession charges and they will probably note your cooperation on your file. By working with them you might have more luck negotiating or if things turn around for you, they might give you an opportunity to redeem your car loan.
Sometimes we can't avoid situations...but we can always control how we deal with them.
I hope you found yourself a solution that works for you and I also hope your car isn't hiding!
