I think my case was the best with Wells Fargo. I bought my car when they were trans Canada Credit......Wells Fargo took over and changed my account number and didnt tell me.....I was still making payments however went to old account number......bailiff shows up repoes my car.....I had to fight with them and show proof that I paid and was their mistake.......took me a week to get my car back from the auction house......and was on my dime of course.....then took me over three months to get my money back from them after proving them wrong.....they had my payments all along but credited someone elses account......not even a sorry we were wrong.....but I had to pay the 1000$ to get my car out which included storage fees and bailiff charges......I will never get loan ferom them ever again.......I will walk first!!!!!!!

Everyone on this thread has given some positive feedback (except for Grand Theft Auto...hide it? Terrible and irresponsible advice).

I'd just like to add something:

By returning the vehicle you are defaulting on your contract and you will be penalized for it. Obviously avoiding that is the best option for your credit.

But since you have a family emergency, so returning the vehicle might be the best option for you.

It was suggested that you return the vehicle and be up front with the lender. While they may not settle with you initially, it will not hurt you to explain your situation and your good intentions.

At the very least you will avoid extra collection or repossession charges and they will probably note your cooperation on your file. By working with them you might have more luck negotiating or if things turn around for you, they might give you an opportunity to redeem your car loan.

Sometimes we can't avoid situations...but we can always control how we deal with them.

I hope you found yourself a solution that works for you and I also hope your car isn't hiding!

Marco716,

I also forgot to mention, if your in a position to settle your debt someday give RichardC at total debt freedom a call. I always advice people if you can do your own settlements yourself that’s great, but if you can’t call richardc he is a professional and he will get the job done right the first time for you.

Cheers

Come-on, hide the vehicle? Really?

Where is the /facepalm icon Monty?

Besides being wrong and totally unethical, most car finance outfits have a GPS locator hidden in the cars they lien.

Listen to AJ and Albert’s on this one, return the car but make sure everything is in order. They do ding you for damage to the vehicle they are forced to repair.

The balance owed can always be settled at a later date when you are in a position to do so.

I agree with Joe however make sure it is as clean as possible when you go and see them. They may even beable to reduce the amount of the debt or something atleast if you are up front they can give you options. You will have some control if contact them, if you make them look and search then it is worse because they tack on fees and interest.

The advice you’re giving this member is not the smart way to go about it. If the car loan is in default and you do not return the car, you could be charged with theft. If you voluntary return the car, they might cut you a break when it comes to settling the debt because of your situation.

I would call Wells Fargo up and explain your situation. I would try and settle this debt in the near future. If you do come to a settlement agreement, make sure you get the agreement in writing before you hand over your money.
