Every now and then; you get some collectors that come on here and they want to preach the Jim Baker Gospel. The bottom line to all debtors out there; you do not have to settle your debt with the collection agencies, you can settle with the creditors. All you have to do is; call the creditors customer service and ask for the fax number of their collection department. When you get their fax number; start writing a letter of your financial hardship stating you want to settle your debt for a certain percentage.

If the creditors tells you that you have to deal with the collection agency; just tell them the collection agency is being rude and unprofessional and the debt will go unpaid if you can not settle the debt directly with them. The creditor will see your serious and will want to settle your debt. I settled over ten debts that were in collections and I started to negotiate directly with the creditors. The collection agencies didn’t like it but too bad; I wasn’t handing over money to a collection agency that didn’t deserve it. I also had a couple ombudsman’s at these financial institutions intervene and help me settle my debts.

Wow! I didn't know I would stir the feathers of some very uptight, illmannered roosters....Collection1- hum passing judgement when you don't have the foggiest idea of my personal situation...but won't waste my time to even explain...obviously you are the bully in playground...

To update...I contacted the ombudsman at Capital One...very nice man...I explained Allied response to my asking for a Settlement Offer in writing....He was right on Allied...and they jointly couried me the Settlement Offer....He (they) were nice enough to drop the debt back down to $4000 instead of the $4700...I did apprecaite this.... they gave me until today to pay....Sep 4th....

I was absolutely blown away by the kindness of friends who understood my situation...that I had always paid my bills, I had excellent credit all my life, I'm 56 years old, and a very responsible person....stuff happens in life, and I ended up flat on my back for a year....not literally, but as far as what I could do I might as well have been......I was able to get 3700 together which I paid to Allied Monday.....I asked for a break with the remaining 300. they went back to the trick of well when can you pay it...geppers ... I was just able to get the other 300 which I paid...I thought I want it on paper that all $4000. was paid by Sept 4th, and that is it....

I can see I can learn alot from this site...

I really do feel badly for Collections1 and another person who tore into me....to have that much anger against people they don't know...to make those kinds of judgements....just wait until you find yourself in a bad situation...it doesn't help one bit to tear someones character apart....

I would suggest you find another job or you will stroke out young.

Debtified...and thanks to all who answered me intelligently.

Clearly, collectors for the most part do not like informed debtors, which is the actual purpose of this site. To inform debtors.

agreed... you should wine and dine your clients and treat them like royalty!!

If you didn't have debtors.... you wouldn't have an industry or a job. :)

Collection1,

If it weren't for the debtors, you wouldn't have a job. I think you should be polite to the debtors that make you the commissions and put a roof over your head.

I edited out the bad language....

collection1 is a good example of the type of attitude collectors have... this post should be kept for all to see and review...

collectors don't mind giving people abuse, and it shows that they really need some anger management and counselling.

Nice job collection1... you're a great example of why I dislike collection agencies. Don't swear on the forum any more please.

-with hand on heart- Oh my, reform1, you are so valiant it makes me want to rethink my whole ethos. Once again, stop trying to be an internet champion; if you honestly feel the way you do, you're obviously in the wrong business and, FYI, McDonald's always needs somebody to make the fries. I spoke out because I've had enough, [[edited: bad language]] like you are about as bothersome as a windy day.

Collection1: I am not going to go back and forth with you trading comments or insults.

While you and the collectors around you are "laughing at the debtors" they are doing the same thing back at us. While you are looking down on them for being in debt and being judgemental about them and their lives, trust me they are all looking down on us and judging us too.

All I am saying is there is no need for the aggressive posts as it serves no purpose other than to let you vent but it also gives people another negative view on all the people in our industry.

This is the last post I am going to make on this subject as its not worth my time to debate you.

On a final note, look, seriously, for real, I just shed a tear for all the people that took out debts with absolutely no [[edited: bad language]] intention of paying them back. Now, i know, those people don't exist! This is just a site where in-[[edited: bad language]]-denial-[[edited: bad language]] come to pat each other on the back and say, "that's all right, man, you got a tough break... so don''t pay your [[edited: bad language]] bills and don't let those mean bill collectors get to you... they're just mean!" Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... you [[edited: bad language]] wastes of skin, i suggest a [[edited: bad language]]
