ConfusedCreditGirl, I just went through something similar with Rogers, where an account had been opened in my name in 2004 and I was not aware of it until last year when I tried to apply for a mortgage.
I tried to deal with CBCL, the collection agency who had the debt at the time and was reporting on my credit report and go no where with them. I also tried to call Rogers and explain the situation to them and got no where the first 2-3 times.
Then I finally got someone who created a fraud case and sent the account off for review, they never got in touch with me like I was advised they would and I had to call them back. But when I did get in touch with them, they did inform me it was opened in fraud and that they forwarded this information to CBCL.
So I don't know if contacting Telus and asking them to open a fraud investigation would do you any good, but it worked for me with Rogers.
