They can keep it on your bureau for 6 years from the date of last activity. That should be in 2010.
Basically, you have three options:
Ask for evidence of the bill. Just because a collection agency tells you that you owe money does not necessarily make it so. When/if they cannot provide evidence of the bill, dispute the existence of the bill with the credit bureau, the original creditor, and the collection agency.
Or, you can simply pay the bill. If you do that, you should get, in writing, that they will remove it from the bureau completely in exchange for payment of the debt. I , personally, wouldn't give them 900 for it.
Finally, you can simply leave it be as it will be gone anyway next year... filing a statement on your bureau for any creditors who care to look...plus with the fact that FICO is releasing their new scoring model in which this debt will factor far less into the score than currently is the case.
