Founded in 1898 as the Insurance Department of the Subsidiary High Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters, the Company was incorporated in 1934. Afterwards it was changed having the name of Toronto Mutual Life Insurance Company. It was then renamed again into Unity Life of Canada in 2002, upon its incorporation with its subsidiary which is The Western Life Assurance Company.

On April 2, 2008, Unity Life was transformed from a mutual life insurance company to a stock life insurance company under the ownership of Foresters™. Its headquarters was located in Mississauga, Ontario. Unity Life presently has more than 331,000 active policies and certificates, $16.6 billion of insurance in force, and $992 million in assets. All of the figures are in Canadian dollars as of December 31, 2009. Unity Life of Canada has been rated as an A or Excellent company by A.M. Best Company which specializes in rating financial industry or organizations.

At present, aside from focusing on its Traditional, Pre-need and Specialty insurance lines. Unity Life is Foresters exclusive marketing representative in the Canadian market.
