Benjamin Jack,

I got one from TD... I also got a mortgage with them so i suppose built up an instant credit history. One tip is to get an American Express card in the UK. This then transfers to a canadian one once in Canada unlike Visa/ Mastercard...hops that helps

Has anyone any experience of getting a credit card once arriving in Canada. The TD Bank have told us that we need to give them $500 for them to keep for 3 years (while earning no interest, and we have no access to it!) before they will give us a credit card for $500. Of course, we cannot start to get a good credit history until we get a credit card! Ironic, because we could get $4200 on our UK credit card. The fact that we have a steadily increasing savings account with them makes no difference to them either, it's very frustrating, and we'd like to know what others have experienced.

I'm sorry that I cannot help you specifically.

But I have a small business and many of my customers are Canadian. I've looked into opening a Canadian bank account as a foreigner living outside of Canada just to accept Canadian checks to make things easier. I've found some Canadian banks that have fairly good accounts for "cross border" people -- accounts that would let me collect in either C$ or US$ and write checks in either for example. I don't recall specific bank names and it was about a year ago that I looked into this. But perhaps if you search around online you might find a bank in a border city that would have what you are looking for. Or any large international bank might be able to help. TD for example.

I think Capital One allows you to use your credit card abroad w/o charging a fee.

I am living in Canada for a few years with a work permit. I'd like to get a Canadian credit card so I don't have to pay a fee each time I use my American credit card here. Most of the credit card applications I've looked at so far require one to be a permanent resident. Does anyone know of a (no annual fee, with some sort of rewards) Canadian credit card that does not require one to be a permanent resident?

Renaldo21,
If you're doing a credit card application, you can be sure of the site if the URL starts with https://

According to http://www.instantssl.com/ssl-certificate-products/https.html Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a secure version of the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (http). HTTPS allows secure ecommerce transactions, such as online banking.

You would only apply online with a site that has https:// for their website.. All of the banks and other credit card issuers are going to have this.

Do you live in the U.S.? You mentioned that "Most of my cards are Chase or BOA and AMEX. I will take the Capital One card along with others and give it a try."

Bank of American cards are not available in Canada.

If you are coming here, you can do a credit card application in Canada as soon as you become a citizen of this fine country

I phoned capital one 2 days ago – they do NOT currently offer the cashback card!

If you google for “capital one cash back” the first result is for their cashback card – but when you click the link it brings you to their miles reward card. I was confused about was going on so I phoned and the rep confirmed that they are not offering a cashback card in Canada right now. I even took the rep through the links where it makes reference to the cashback program and she stated that was left up for customers that currently have the card and not for new signups. She said that she couldn’t even see the same info on her end because the offer wasn’t available for reps to see. Too bad – the reward is just slightly less than the CDN Tire cashback card but the Captial One offers other perks like purchase protection, extended warranty and car insurance which the CTFS card does not. Actually, the CTFS card offers a $5 / mo service which gives you purchase protection and warranty doubling up to 7 years. But that makes it a $60/year card so no deal.

I got a Capitol One Visa card especially to use for International Travel as they have no foreign exchange fees. I used mine for a week in Paris in April and then in Ireland in May with no problems. I was also in Denmark in May and noticed that some stores and restaurants in Copenhagen tag on a 5% fee if you use any credit card which I had not encountered in Europe before. Anyone else run into that? As one poster said, be sure and let your credit card company know where you are travelling to.

Out of curiosity I googled Capital One. They list a number of different cards. I ordered the only one that mentioned the "no charge on International purchases"..It is called the Capital One Platinum Prestige card. That doesn't mean that the others don't do the same, but this one has it in their ad. Mine is on its way.

Most of my cards are Chase or BOA and AMEX. I will take the Capital One card along with others and give it a try.

On Jun 2, 2011, Jean Karla Said:
there are only three important steps to follow in creating a successful application. The first step is to Find a Trustworthy Site. Second step is browsing on the different types of credit cards and decide which card is suitable for you. Make sure to read the fine prints of the cards. The last step is fill out the application form of the card and submit it. Apply for Credit Card in Canada
