• Which Canadian Credit Bureaus do Credit Cards Companies Pull Your Report From

I made calls to all of the major banks - credit card companies today and spoke to their credit departments.

The question that I asked them was:
"Which credit bureaus, Equifax or TransUnion do you pull your credit reports from when I start an application with you."

Want to apply for a Apply Today! Capital One Canada secured credit card?

    The responses were as follows:
    Who uses equifax in canada:
TD Canada Trust (TD) Visa - Uses Equifax Canada primarily.
Royal Bank (RBC) Visa - Uses Trans Union of Canada primarily
Bank of Montreal (BMO) MasterCard - Uses Equifax Canada
ScotiaBank Visa - Uses Equifax Canada
CIBC Visa - Uses Equifax Canada

It's interesting to call the different banks and wait on hold while you get a customer service rep to talk to..
I waited the longest on hold - the worst hold time - for Bank of Montreal MasterCard.. the customer service rep wasn't knowledgable or well trained and when she transferred me to her supervisor, the call went into outer space. This was after I waited approximately 20 minutes on hold to ask them my questions. This happened to me the last time I called up BMO's toll free number.

CIBC was the quickest to answer my call, and was the most knowledgeable about answering my questions.

I learned something with this process. I thought all of the major banks used Equifax Canada. It turns out that Royal Bank uses Trans Union.

WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS?!
If you're applying to any one of these major Canadian banks for a credit card, you should contact either Equifax or TransUnion first and get a copy of your credit card. This will better help you know before hand how you'll make out with the application.

Auto loan companies, mortgage companies, Banks, retail creditors.

The Capital One Canada credit card uses TransUnion of Canada to get your credit report.

I applied for student line of credit with the National Bank, who I was told is the most student-friendly. On their website they recommended cheking Equifax (http://www.nbc.ca/bnc/cda/guide/0,1009,divId-2_langId-1_navCode-14295_navCodeEx-1000,00.html?prov=fdr_etudiant)so I checked it and it was good. I applied for the loan and guess what, they checked Transunion and sone wierd credit report agency CreditReport.com. although my Transunion score was good too, I got rejected because my score on CreditReport.com was not good!!!... I got the loan from BMO the next day!!

Who does Citi use?

I know Citifinancial (loans etc) uses Equifax, but do Citicards use them as well?

Yes, Cap One uses both.

Ive also seen BMO, CIBC, and Scotiabank on TU, and Royal Bank on Equifax.

Most Credit Unions use Equifax, although their credit card division seemed to use common sense when I left a lengthy comment about problems with my EFX report and they pulled TU. Most store cards use EFX (except for the new Source By Circuit City credit card which uses TU).

I've seen MBNA on both EFX and TU, but primarily TU.

sean nethercott,
MBNA more than likely uses Equifax pull your credit report. I should call them to confirm.

Who does Amex use?

(Oh, and to add to the data here. It appears the CapOne(Canada) did hard pulls on both my Equifax and Transunion reports when I applied, and have since been doing soft pulls every 3 months on Equifax ONLY.

For what it's worth.

Good to know too. I'd just assumed (frankly) that accepted practice was to check with both bureaus, of course that does seem a little impractical in retrospect.

Fascinating stuff now that I'm regularly pouring over my credit reports (both free and online).

Hey Vitzbitz...

The credit card companies mostly said that they would used a second credit bureau if they couldn't get enough information from the first one to establish the client's credit picture....

Interestingly, only CIBC said that they would only use Equifax and NOT TransUnion.

Strange, when I pulled my credit report it showed that CapOne had checked (on the same day) with BOTH Transunion and Equifax.

Still it's interesting to know.
