• This is a controversial piece from Youtube.com

This clip is about a guy that's talking about an article in the Charleston Post & Courier about a woman, named Brenda Kelly in the Charleston, West Virgina. who has 6 kids

    Other posts about Brenda Kelly

This is kind of a graphic video about a woman who has had 6 kids, and is now complaining about making $6 per hour, has made some bad decisions in life etc.

I'm curious to get your feed back on this video:
Should people be allowed to speak this openly about the social conditions of a working poor mom of six.
Should we applaud his honesty and bravery for speaking up about this topic.
Is this guys comment that "she should just stop having kids!!" too much?

How should we feel about what this guy is saying?

The blogger over at: http://www.couriercritic.blogspot.com/ had this to say:
Her children haven?t made the choices that THEY live with. They didn?t select their mother. And she is the only mother they?ll ever have. Any ?handouts? are as much for THEM (maybe more so) than they are for her. The article was weak on details of WHY she has either kept or lost her children, so unless you know the full details, you certainly can?t decide that the children are better off elsewhere!

I agree with you - the system is set up to help people in her situation but she has to reach out FOR that help, and she HAS to be willing to change her habits. I just read your comment:
"People need to get back to more and more of a basic life style. Be happy with more basic things. I think that's where the new consuming cycle is going to take us in the next ten years"
I would say consumerism is one thing that has greatly affected people like Brenda Kelly.

Mama Grizzly,

I agree that the fellow who created the video was probably interested in creating buzz for his own site or blog and left out much of her personal details. Quite frankly, who really knows another person's intimate details unless you live with them.

In my memory, one of the main questions of that video is Brenda wondering why she had fallen into that situation. She didn't understand how she gotten into the situation and started complaining about the services not supporting her.

I'm sure Brenda Kelly's is not an isolated case. Her case just happened to hit the newspapers in Charleston, West Virginia

Well, his facts are not "quite" right as the only income that Brenda has herself is her $6 an hour job and $581 in food stamps per month. Her SISTER, who has lived with her for a couple of months, receives $1,200 per month SSI for 2 of her children. The newspaper article left out SO many parts of her situation that it is truly impossible for the general public to judge her situation.

Painting everybody on welfare with the same brush is, in my opinion, a little rough. We don't know all the events that lead up to this womans current situation. Having said that I do not think the answer to situations like this is more money. In my opinion financial education would go much further.

Honestly,
This is what most people really want to say but are just too polite to say it. It's funny that someone took the time to talk about her case and then put it on youtube.com maybe a little self promotion for his blog?
